Struggles in School and Life?

School and life help with Kinetic Konnections

“My third grader is having such a hard year. Last year was ok, but this year is a struggle. Behavior, homework, video games, not listening—everything turns into a fight.”

You are not alone! Third grade is often a defining year—the importance of organization, paying attention and reading speed all significantly ramp up. As the expectations increase, generally bright children who may have been compensating, begin to run out of options.

Often, we see 7-9 year-olds after their school conferences created a surprise. Classroom focus, homework refusal, and melting down once they get home from school are all common reasons parents bring us their school age children.

Don’t worry. Yes, these can change and we can help.

How We Help

We look at life’s events and how your child’s birth and growth has impacted the essential regulation, movement, and sensory systems that help us focus, control our emotions, and reduce the urge to act out. Kids’ bodies that worked well for gross motor and fundamental academic skills can get stuck transitioning to the next level of physical, emotional, and developmental demands.

Some of the common events we find impacting this age group are:

  • Falls, bike or auto accidents
  • Poorly integrated body and visual function
  • Common birth stress
  • Respiratory events or surgeries

Next Steps

We help with linking together all the growing parts of your child’s body with balance and vision coordination.

If all of this resonates with you, here are the next steps:

  1. Everyone on the team works with children so schedule your first appointment at a time that fits your life.
  2. Read about what to expect in the first visit.
  3. Complete the intake information.
  4. Take a deep breath.

Your follow up schedule will usually be 2-3 more times, spaced 4-6 weeks apart. These are 55-minute appointments. After this we often follow-up in 3-6 months, if needed. It doesn’t take a lot of time for you and your child to see changes and better results.

Client Stories

Family 1:

For one boy we saw, everything was a struggle—friends, school, activities, and interacting with family. The parents were worried – was this the way it was going to always be? We found a traumatic medical procedure as an infant had set him on a path which made it hard for his upper and lower body to coordinate. It explained so much! By sequentially adding symmetry to core movements and reintegrating limb coordination to the core, he calmed immediately. His school behavior began to change soon after.

Family 2:

For one child, reading wasn’t happening. Homework struggles were an everyday thing. Frustration was increasing for both child and parent. We found a pre-school playground injury had messed up the coordination of his head, body, and vision. We re-created the essence of the playground injury to understand and then re-direct specific movements thrown off between his head and body. His reading ability changed in days! Now, homework struggles are a thing of the past.

Family 3:

A boy we recently met was a standout athlete but focus and paying attention were constantly a battle. Through our unique form of questioning, we discovered that his birth was a bit traumatic—late and long. Because of this his core still functioned as if it were all squished up, which meant coordinating his body with his head wasn’t so easy. By re-centering his movements and helping his upper body stretch out and get the space needed to regulate movement, he is doing well across the board!
