Do Kids or Adults Change More Easily?
Recently we had a client ask, “Is it easier to help kids, or adults?” My answer, “It depends.”
Why?
It depends on what event derailed the movement and regulation continuum, and when in time the derailment happened.
Like the trains our children play with, a train on tracks is a useful metaphor to explain this derailment:
- Did it jump the tracks and needs help getting back on track?
- Did it end up on the wrong track blindly going on its way toward a different destination? or
- Is it stuck in a web of various tracks going multiple directions?
Using our recent discussion on post-surgical recovery, we can look at whether its easier to reorganize movement for an adult or child. Using the train track analogy, an adult tends to be simpler in the post-surgical scenario.
Adults often are a simpler scenario
In the case of a post-procedure intervention, resolving pain, stiffness, and fluency is usually straightforward.
Why? Your recovery exercises only helped so much. Your body overall is still in stuck in the way it worked before the surgery. You just need help getting ALL of your body’s movements switched onto a better track.
The gentle movement of the Bridging® technique is what guides your body back onto the right track.
Once that happens, away you go, back to your active life!
Kids’ movements are like sorting out an ever-changing maze!
Yes, the specific movements are faster and easier to change for kids. However there is one HUGE difference between a child and an adult. A child is still growing!
A medical procedure in a young child can cause them to jump the track developmentally. The interconnectedness of domains of development become splintered (like the many train tracks shown).
Keeping the growing child on-track becomes the next challenge. Just like a train set with the one odd piece of track, most of the time the train runs fine, but every so often it jumps off in the same spot.
Bridging helps to guide a child’s development onto a new track, step by step, as they continue to grow. This is one way we uniquely support your child!
At Kinetic Konnections we love being able to offer alternatives for getting your family back on track. An in-person or virtual session may be the missing piece to you or your child moving forward toward your/their goals.
Our goal at Kinetic Konnections is to keep your body optimally organized to behave, focus and be active for the things you enjoy in life.
