This is a common response from clients when we ask about past injuries and physical trauma.

Neck trauma from a rear-end auto accident is a bit sneaky. There’s nothing broken so you think all will be ok after a little time.

Maybe, but often that’s not the case. There are so many little neck muscles which get thrown off their game by the rapid succession of impacts when your body is involved in a rear-end accident.

You may not notice any issues until days or weeks later.

We meet clients who have a hard time staying active because they are dealing with neck or shoulder pain. Often there is often a rear-end auto accident in their past. It didn’t seem like such a big deal, other than frightening and inconvenient. But to your muscles it is a big deal!

Rear-end accidents leave a unique signature of stress on your muscles that makes it hard for your body to bounce back on its own.

Three reasons why a rear-end accident is uniquely hard on your body

If you were the driver, the following issues reflect the way that the accident’s impact forces were absorbed by your body. Passengers or rear seat occupants will have similar but different trauma patterns.

  • Asymmetrical HEAD stress: The seat belt is a fantastic restraint, but it allows your head and right shoulder to rapidly rotate to the left. (A whiplash type of motion.) The neck muscles on the left get compressed and the muscles on the right get over-extended. They lose their ability to control and coordinate head rotation.
  • Asymmetrical SHOULDER compression: The left side seatbelt clamps your shoulder in place. When the accident force is from behind, your shoulder rams forward into the restraint. The compression jams your shoulder and upper core, limiting neck and shoulder motion of the left side. This pulls your head off-center, causing visual stress and right-side neck pain.
  • Diagonal CHEST compression: Much like a poor origami fold, the force from the rear impact forces the core against the seatbelt. This imprints a diagonal fold pattern into the core, which interferes with the body’s normal midline fold. This causes postural fatigue, which interferes with good head support, and diaphragmatic breathing (for calming).

The systems-based problem solving process we use will surface these highly specific movement glitches. We are then able to quickly identify and reset the associated muscle groups.
