Feeling Snow-related Soreness? You’re Not Alone

Snow, Being Active, and Your Muscles

Have you had a chance to be out playing in the snow?

This is the season to rediscover your inner child, and enjoy the magic that snow and winter activities bring!

Me, I’ve been out a couple of times with my snow shoes. The time in the pristine woods is exhilarating, and its a pretty challenging leg workout. The zone 3 cardio is more exhausting than you’d guess!

A Snowy Start to Winter!

The Chicago area is off to its snowiest start to winter since the epic 1978–79 season.

I remember that winter well — cars buried for months, towering piles of snow still lingering at spring break. While I’m enjoying this year’s flakes, I’m happy to skip reliving that record-setting snow!

But as fun as it is to play (or shovel) in the snow, your muscles might not share your enthusiasm.

Snow Challenges Muscles in Different Ways

Here’s why your muscles may be calling for attention this season (especially if they are already challenged by prior injuries, medical procedures, or early developmental glitches):

  • ❄️ Shoveling: Lifting heavy snow while twisting your torso is one of the best training movements for your back and arms. However, even a few rounds can leave muscles stiff, irritated, and unable to bounce back on their own.
  • 🧊 Falling: When snow melts and refreezes, slippery surfaces are inevitable. Even minor falls — without breaks or sprains — can knock your structural alignment off, leaving muscles struggling to work together.
  • ⛷️ Sledding, skiing, snowshoeing: These are great fun (and great workouts), but they challenge muscles in new ways. Unfamiliar movement patterns can expose imbalances or leave you sore in unexpected places.

Any of these in the right scenario can throw your body off enough that it has a hard time recovering on its own.

Bridging Can Help You Recover!

A Bridging® session can:

  • Gently reset how your muscles coordinate after slips, twists, or overuse
  • Restore balance and mobility so you can keep enjoying the season
  • Reduce stiffness or soreness that lingers after winter activities

So go ahead — embrace the joy of winter fun. And if your body feels off after shoveling, skiing, or just staying upright on the ice, we’re here to help you move comfortably again.
